I was once fired as a friendhand
because “all I did was complain.”
It made me sad, but she was right.
I chose a change.
Like all changes it took much practice.
In time, these times, the cancer times,
I see the seeds of complaint watered in my mind
and I can’t stand it. I want to move
out of my head to new digs…
The touch of a velvet dress,
of chill air on my cheeks,
how a chickadee’s shivering moves me
to rush to the bread box
or the spice jar for something to give.
The offering, so appreciated,
inspires a song for me
and I see joy again
watered inside me.
